Departure (born Steven Bietz; August 17, 2007) is a plunderphonics & hip-hop producer based in Texas. Departure started in the Vaporwave scene as the main runner of the project Chuck Person's Eccojams, Vol. 3 in 2020 via a Reddit post. This project would grow into the soon ill-fated half-collective half-label Ecco Inc., which would be rebranded as the group Sky Nouveau International. The group now makes remix albums of popular Vaporwave releases and is currently working on a remix compilation of death's dynamic shroud's I'll Try Living Like This.
Departure first initially began producing music in October 2016 under the name SUBLIMINAL MESSAGE on popular streaming site Soundcloud. This alias would eventually evolve roughly 5 more times between 2016 and 2019 until eventually turn into the name 000F-DEPRESSING_MAC. This would be shortened to just MAC, by which time Departure began making mashup albums under this alias. Between December 2019 and June 2020, Departure would release 13 different mashup albums and multiple other assorted genre releases under the MAC alias. In April of 2020, Departure also began the Chuck Person's Eccojams, Vol. 3 project where he would meet fellow artists Tak Zero, Lav Kazan, Tokyocat and Helios the Vaporwave Elf. Along with these 5 and a number of assorted others, they would go on to produce the Chuck Person's Eccojams, Vol. 3 project and evolve into Ecco Inc., a strong but short-standing collective with Departure branded as "a startup for vaporwave artists looking to get some promo". Ecco Inc. would eventually be rebranded as Sky Nouveau International in September 2020 and the Chuck Person's Eccojams, Vol. 3 project would be re-released for its six-month anniversary.
In February 2021, with fellow collaborator Butterfly Boy, Departure would start the plunderphonics project Homebound Kid, which would go on to release their debut album Not So World Famous in June 2021. Butterfly Boy would then leave in September 2021 after inducting their third member, High Life, and later Departure and High Life would induct their next member, Luxi.
