Music sorted by type of release, typically dependent on number of tracks and context.
Release Type Guide
- Albums are standard releases that typically have a minimum of 8 tracks, usually anywhere above 20-25 minutes in length.
- EPs are shorter releases, usually ranging from 2-8 tracks (and likely under 20-30 minutes in length.)
- Sometimes Album and EP labels are interchangeable with drastic modifications of these parameters. Releases can be EP-length but contain an album's worth of individual tracks, or have an EP's number of songs that add up to an album length.
- Singles are average-length, one-track releases usually published in a more casual manner than other release types. These can also occasionally include remixes of the single, a second track, or even a separate track from another artist in a split fashion included.
- Mixes are collections of tracks compiled by artists, labels or fans, either done thematically or for general enjoyment.
- Compilations are collaborative projects between various artists under a single release, typically through a label.
- Remix Compilations are compilations dedicated to multiple artists remixing a particular release or artist discography.
- Splits are releases created by two or more artists submitting individual tracks.
- Collaborations are releases involving direct collaboration on all tracks by multiple artists.
- Collections are two or more releases fused together, sometimes with bonus tracks, sometimes in a way that replaces the original releases.
- Samplers are releases consisting of previous tracks compiled in a best-of format, published by artists or, most commonly, labels.
- Remixes are releases (typically singles) remixing the work of another artist.
- Archival Releases are self-compilations of an artists' previous work, e.g. a collection of SoundCloud singles, compilation works, or unreleased tracks put together.
