Description

As one of the first albums to define the sound of VHS Pop, Video 2000’s album “Eternal” has stood the test of time and remains alongside greats from the current generation of the style. Mixing together funky, more pop-oriented samples and hints of hip-hop, his style mainly emphasizes a certain punchiness that is drawn out from the tracks that he works with.

Drums hit harder and struck keys have a wavering, dreamy feel to them, causing the a sort of “rolling” effect in the sound that many vapor artists afterwards also experimented with. This approach strikes a line straight between late night lo-fi textures and future funk approaches to its effects, solidifying its own identity in early vaporwave.

Even nearly ten years later, many artists have followed this line of thought, whether or not they are fully aware of its origins in the vaporwave scene. The distortion heavy, groove-focused, sidechain first style of Video 2000’s art lives on into the 2020s, both through other artists and through a new tape release of their classic album.
